The Jungle Book 2

Mowgli wasn't sure about life in the Man-village. Sure, the village leader and his wife treated Mowgli like a son. And he even had a new four-year-old brother, Ranjan. But he had to do so many chores and obey so many rules!
Mowgli often missed his carefree days in the jungle. He liked telling stories about his adventures and performing puppet shows for his new friends and family, although sometimes Ranjan got in the way.

-1-
Mowgli's new friend Shanti liked hearing his stories. But sometimes he and Ranjan would try to scare her with tales of the wild jungle.
 -2-

One morning, Mowgli and Ranjan raced down to the river. They arrived seconds before Shanti did.
"What are you doing here?" she asked Mowgli.
"I'm on the lookout," Mowgli told her. "Yesterday I saw tiger tracks right here! So watch your back, or the last thing you'll ever hear is ...."
"ROAAARRR!" Ranjan yelled, leaping out of the bushes.
Shanti screamed and dropped her water jug. "You're horrible, horrible stinky boys!" she cried. "C'mon, Ranjan. He's a bad influence," she said, dragging the young boy away.
-3-
Mowgli felt bad about scaring Shanti, so he brought the water jug back to her. Then he decided to show her and Ranjan a clever trick he had learned in the jungle. He shot a banana out of it's peel and right into Ranjan's mouth.
"Well, here's a little trick I learned right here at home," Shanti said. She tossed a mango into the air. It caught on a branch and peeled itself on the way down.
"Wow, that's a neater trick!" Ranjan cried.

-4-

Moments later, Mowgli started dancing to the jungle rhythms from across the river. Ranjan and the other village children joined in. Even Shanti couldn't help dancing along.
Suddenly, she realized where Mowgli was leading them.
"Wait!" she cried. "Stop! You're crossing the river! You can't go into the jungle!"
Ranjan's father heard Shanti's cries. He called the children back, then scolded Mowgli. "The jungle is a dangerous place," he said. He rolled up his sleeve to show Mowgli the scars on his arm ... scars from a tiger's claws. "I should know."
-5-
Later, Mowgli stared out his window at the jungle in the distance. "Oh, Baloo," he whispered. How he missed his best friend!
At that same moment, out in the jungle, Baloo the bear was missing Mowgli. He tried to build a Man-cub out of plants and a coconut, but it just wasn't the same.
Bagheera the panther watched Baloo. "Poor fellow," he murmured.

 -6-

As Baloo and Bagheera wandered off, a shadow fell across the clearing. It was Shere Khan, the tiger! His huge paw came down hard, crushing the fake Mowgli head.
Shere Khan was still angry at Mowgli for burning his tail with a fiery branch. He wanted revenge!  All he had to do was find the Man-cub.

-7-
Meanwhile, Baloo decided it was time to find his little buddy. He set off for the Man-village.
Bagheera stepped in front of him. "It's not safe for Mowgli in the jungle," he said. "You know Shere Khan is looking for him."

But Baloo wouldn't listen ... not even Colonel Hathi and his elephant troops could stop him for going to the Man-village.
 -8-

As Baloo entered the Man-village, he had no idea that Shere Khan was close behind him.
"Papa Bear! Boy, am I glad to see you!" Mowgli  cried when he saw his friend. He and Baloo gave each other a big  hug. Then the happy pair began playing the way they used to in the jungle.
Shanti arrived just in time to see the reunion. She thought Baloo was a wild bear ... and that he was attacking Mowgli!
"Help!", she screamed. "There's a wild animal in the village!"
Startled, Baloo grabbed Mowgli and ran away.
-9-

The villagers rushed out and spotted ... Shere Khan! They quickly chased the tiger out of the village.
Shanti was confused. Why wasn't anyone helping her save Mowgli from the vicious bear? She chased Baloo and Mowgli herself ... all the way across the river and into the jungle! Ranjan was the only one who saw her go.

 -10-

Kaa spotted Baloo and Mowgli as they wandered into the jungle.
"Do my sssnake eyesss deceive me?" he said. "It's the sssucculent Man-cub!"
Unaware of the snake, Baloo licked some tasty ants from the bottom of a rock. Then tossed the rock to Mowgli.
"Thanks, Baloo," Mowgli licked off a few ants, then threw the rock over his shoulder. It hit Kaa right in the head!

-11-
As Shanti searched for Mowgli, Kaa spotted her, too. But Ranjan appeared just in time to save Shanti from the hungry snake. "Bad snake!" Ranjan shouted, beating Kaa with a stick.

Moments later, Shere Khan found Kaa lying dazed on the ground. "Where's the Man-cub?" the tiger demanded.
Kaa didn't know where Mowgli had gone, but he didn't want to make Shere Khan angry, "He'sss at the ssswamp!" he fibbed.

 -12-

So Shere Khan set off for the swamp just as the villagers reached the jungle in search of the three missing children.
Colonel Hathi and his elephant troops panicked when they heard the humans. They were afraid the humans were there to go hunting.
"Man is in the jungle!" Colonel Hathi cried.
As a group of villagers passed nearby, Bagheera saw that the elephant was right.
  "Shanti! Ranjan!" a woman called.
  "Mowgli!" Ranjan's father cried.
Suddenly, Bagheera realized why the villagers were there. "Baloo ...," he muttered.

-13-
Mowgli had no idea he was causing such trouble.
He tossed a mango into the air, just as Shanti had done back at the village. It peeled itself on a tree branch on the way down.
"Not bad!" Baloo said, "Where'd you learn to do that?"
  "Shanti showed me," Mowgli replied.
"Shanti?" Baloo repeated suspiciously. He was a little jealous that Mowgli had a new friend>

 -14-

Just then Bagheera arrived. "What are you doing out here, Baggy?" Baloo asked, hiding Mowgli behind him.
"Man is in the jungle," Bagheera replied grimly. "They're searching for Mowgli."
"Wow," Mowgli said after Bagheer left. "The whole village is looking for me? I wonder if Shanti's with them."
"Shanti?" Baloo exclaimed. "You definitely don't want her to find you, do ya?"
Mowgli realized his old friend was right ... he didn't need his human friends anymore. He made Baloo promise to scare Shanti away if she ever caught up with them. Baloo agreed, and the pair practiced scaring.
-15-

Shanti was worried. She and Ranjan were lost. She made a map of sticks and stones to help them figure out where they were.
"Okay, here's the village," she muttered. "We crossed the river and ... um ..."
As Shanti rearranged some of the stones, Ranjan spotted a mango peel nearby.
Shanti gasped when she saw the peel.
"It's Mowgli! He must have been here!" she shouted.

-16-

On his search for Mowgli, Shere Khan had just reached the swamp. But there was no sign of the Man-cub.
"That snake lied to me!" Shere Khan growled.
Some vultures were watching him. "We heard that kid is right here in the jungle, right under your whiskers," one of the told Shere Khan. "They say he's headed downriver with a bear."
"Downriver, you say?" The tiger smiled wickedly and dashed off.

-17-
Meanwhile, Baloo took Mowgli to an old temple. As a baboon band started to play, Baloo and Mowgli danced off into the crowd.
After the dance was over, a monkey asked Mowgli, "They don't swing out like that in your Man-village, now, do they, kid?"
"He told me all about that scene," Baloo interrupted. "They've got rules, rules, rules!"
Mowgli started to feel bad. They made it sound as if the Man-village were a terrible place to live!

 -18-

Mowgli slipped away from Baloo and the others. He found a tree branch with a view of the Man-village and climbed onto it to think.
Staring at the village, he wondered where he really belonged. He missed Shanti and Ranjan and his other friends in the village. But he didn't want to leave Baloo and his friends in the jungle. What was he suppose to do?

-19-
As Shanti and Ranjan continued searching for Mowgli, they heard a sad humming up ahead.
  "Mowgli!" Ranjan cried happily.
He and Shanti found their friend sitting in a tree. Mowgli was so surprised and excited to see them that he slipped and tangled in some vines.
"What are you doing out here?" he asked Shanti.
"We came to save you," Shanti explained.

 -20-

Seconds later, Baloo appeared. The bear gasped. "It's her!" He remembered that Mowgli wanted him to scare Shanti away.
   "ROOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRR!" Baloo charged toward them.
  "Baloo, don't!" Mowgli cried.
But it was too late. Ranjan screamed in terror.
Suddenly, the bear tripped on a vine. It wrapped around his leg, tangling him like Mowgli.
Shanti was scared. But she was angry too. She stepped up and punched Baloo right in the nose.
Mowgli felt terrible. This was all his fault.

-21-
All of a sudden, Shanti realized what was going on. "You planned this?" she demanded, glaring at Mowgli.
"No!" Mowgli cried. "Shanti let me explain!"
Shanti grabbed Ranjan and stormed off. Mowglui chased after them, leaving Baloo behind.
Mowgli caught up with Shanti a moment later. Her eyes were wide and frightened. Mowgli turned ... and saw Shere Khan slinking toward them!
The tiger chuckled. "You seem surprised to see me Man-cub."
Mowgli jumped in front of Shanti and Ranjan, trying to protect them.

 -22-

"Run!" Mowgli whispered to his friends.
Mowgli, Shanti and Ranjan ran through the jungle until they found a hiding place in some overgrown bushes. "Stay here!" Mowgli told them.
"Mowgli, no!" Shanti cried. But Mowgli had already run off, with Shere Khan in hot pursuit.
"Ranjan, wait here," she said. "I've got to go help Mowgli."
Ranjan did as she said ... for about two seconds, As he followed the others, he ran into Baloo.
"Where's Mowgli?" Baloo asked the boy.
  Ranjan pointed. "Shere Khan!"
"Shere Khan? Hold on!" Setting Ranjan on his shoulders, Baloo rushed to the rescue.

-23-

Mowgli was still doing his best to stay ahead of Shere Khan. He reached the ruins of an ancient city and hurried into a giant theater to find a hiding place.
A second later, Shere Khan appeared. The tiger glanced around. The theater was silent and still.
"No matter how fast you run, no matter where you hide, I will catch you," Shere Khan said with a growl. "Come out, come out, wherever you are!"

 -24-

As Baloo and Ranjan searched for Mowgli, they ran into Bagheera. The panther was startled to see another Man-cub.
"Take the kid, Baggy," Baloo panted, handing Ranjan over to Bagheera when the reached the ruined city. "I'll help Mowgli."
  "Baloo!" Bagheera called. "Be careful!"
Baloo nodded. Then crept into the theater.

-25-

While Shere Khan prowled nearby, Baloo quietly searched for Mowgli. Suddenly, Baloo heard a noise. He slowly rounded a corner and ran right into ... Shanti.
  "You!" they both cried.
They started to argue. Then they realized they were both there for the same reason ... to help a friend.
"All right," Baloo said to Shanti. "You go that way. I'll cover you."

 -26-

While Baloo and Shanti each hid behind a giant gong, Mowgli dove behind another one. The three friends tricked Shere Khan by taking turns banging the huge disks. Soon the confused tiger was running in circles, chasing the sounds.
Suddenly Shanti's gong fell over, revealing her hiding place. Mowgli jumped out to save her.
Shere Khan's eyes narrowed. "No more games, Man-cub."
Mowgli and Shanti ran away as Baloo tried to distract Shere Khan. But the tiger ran past Baloo and chased Mowglui and Shanti onto a ledge overlooking a pit of boiling lava.
-27-
Shere Khan roared as he closed in. The Man-cub was about to be his!
Baloo ran toward them as the tiger charged. "Mowgli, look out!" the bear cried.
As Shere Khan leaped at them, Mowgli and Shanti jumped across the lava pit onto a giant statue. Shere Khan followed but his weight was too much for the crumbling stone. The statue collapsed and they all tumbled down, heading straight for the bubbling pit!
Luckily, Baloo stretched his giant paw down just in time to grab Mowgli and Shanti.

 -28-

Mowgli and Shanti looked down to see that Shere Khan had landed on a stone pedestal surrounded by lava. The tiger was trapped!
A few minutes later, Mowgli watched sadly as Shanti and Ranjan were reunited with their parents. He looked at Baloo.
Suddenly, Mowgli knew where he belonged.

-29-
  "Oh Baloo," Mowgli murmured sadly.
Baloo guessed what was coming. "It's okay kid," he said. "Go on."
Mowgli stared at his old friend. "Really?"
Baloo nodded. Mowgli grabbed him, burying his face in the bear's warm fur. They hugged for a long moment.
"I'm gonna miss you, Papa Bear," Mowgli said.
"Me too, Li'l Britches," Baloo replied with a sniffle. "Me too."

 -30-

Back at the Man-village, life went on as usual. Well ... almost as usual.
"Come on, Mowgli," Shanti called. "We'll be late!"
Mowgli grabbed a large water jug. "I'm right behind you."
They told the grown-ups they were going to fetch water. Then they raced to the river and skipped across the rocks to the jungle side. Ranjan popped out of Mowgli's jug.
"Let's remember to actually bring back some water," Mowgli said to the others.
As they drummed on the empty jugs, Baloo emerged from the jungle.
"Hiya, Papa Bear!" Mowgli called happily.

-31-
Soon Bagheera appeared, too. Ranjan hopped onto the panther's back as Baloo, Mowgli and Shanti danced to the jungle rhythms.
Mowgli was finally where he belonged ... with all his friends!

Beauty and the beast

O
nce upon a time, a young Prince lived in a shining castle. One cold night an old beggar woman arrived, offering him a single rose in return for shelter from the cold. Repulsed by her ugliness, he turned her away. Suddenly she transformed into a beautifulenchantress. To Punish the Prince, she turned him into a hideous beast. Then she gave him a magic mirror and the enchanted rose, telling him it would bloom until his twenty-first year. To break the spell, he must love another and earn that person’s love in return before the last petal fell.
-1-
Nearby, in a small village, a beautiful young woman named Belle hurried through town. She greeted the townspeople and then rushed to her favorite shop - the bookstore. The owner gave her a book as a gift.
A dreamy look crossed Belle’s face. "It’s my favorite! Far-off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise ... Oh, thank you very much!"
A dreamy look crossed Belle’s face. "It’s my favorite! Far-off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise ... Oh, thank you very much!"
Belle rushed outside,
reading as she walked.

-2-

As Belle walked, a handsome hunter named Gaston ran after her. "Belle, the whole town’s talking about you. It’s not right for a woman to read! It’s about time you got your nose out of those books and paid attention to more important things - like me."
Belle tried to get away without being rude, but Gaston’s friend LeFou joined them and began to insult her father, an inventor.

-3-

"My father’s not crazy! He’s a genius!" As Belle spoke, an explosion boomed from her father’s cottage and she took off running.
At the cottage, Belle found her father and told him what the villagers were saying about her. "They think I’m odd, Papa."
"Don’t worry, Belle. My invention’s going to change everything for us. We won’t have to live in this little town forever!"
Belle’s father hitched up their horse, Philippe, and set off for the fair with his new invention.
Belle waved.
"Good-bye!
Good luck!"
 -4-

But Maurice got lost and accidentally led Philippe into a bleak, misty forest. As he paused to get his bearings, Maurice saw two yellow eyes staring out of the darkness. It was a wolf! Philippe reared and bolted away. Terrified, Maurice ran through the forest with the wolves racing behind him. When he reached a tall heavy gate, Maurice dashed inside, slamming the gate on the wolf whose sharp teeth snapped at his leg.

-5-
Still trembling, Maurice turned to see a huge, forbidding castle. "Hello? I’ve lost my horse, and I need a place to stay for the night."
"Of course, Monsieur! You are welcome here!" Maurice whirled around. There was no one in sight! Then he looked down and saw a mantel clock with a stern, frowning face. Beside him stood a smiling candelabra! Maurice grabbed the clock and examined it.
"This is impossible. Why - you’re alive!" The enchantress had also turned all the Prince’s servants into household objects.

 -6-

As Cogsworth the mantel clock protested, Lumiere, the candelabra showed Maurice into the drawing room. There he met a friendly teapot named Mrs. Potts and her son, a cute teacup named Chip.

-7-
Suddenly, the door flew open. A voice boomed. "There’s a stranger here..."
Maurice jumped out of his chair. In the shadows lurked a large, hulking figure. "Please... I need a place to stay..."

"
I’ll give you a place to stay!" The Beast grabbed Maurice and dragged him out of the room.

 -8-

Back home at the cottage, Belle heard a knock at the door and opened it. "Gaston! What a ‘pleasant’ surprise!"
"Belle, there’s not a girl in town who wouldn’t love to be in your shoes. Do you know why? Because I want to marry you!"
"Gaston, I’m speechless! I’m sorry, but... but... I just don’t deserve you!" As Gaston left he tripped and fell in the mud. When Belle peeked out, she saw that the villagers had gathered in her yard hoping to see a wedding. The vicar and all Gaston’s friends saw him humiliated!
-9-

After the villagers and a very angry Gaston left, Belle ran outside to feed the chickens. There she found Philippe, alone. "Philippe! What are you doing here? Where’s Papa?"
The horse whinnied anxiously. Frightened, Belle leaped onto Philippe and returned to the mysterious forest. Soon, they found the castle.

 -10-

"What is this place?" Belle tried to steady Philippe. Then she saw Maurice’s hat on the ground.
Belle hurried inside the gloomy castle and wandered down the vast, deserted corridors. Papa? Are you here? It’s Belle." No one replied, but Belle didn’t know that the Enchanted Objects had seen her.
With joy, Lumiere danced around the mantel clock. "Don’t you see? She’s the one! She has come to break the spell!"
Without noticing them, Belle continued to search for her father.

-11-
Finally, Belle discovered Maurice locked in a tower. "Papa! We have get you out of there!" Suddenly she heard a voice from the shadows.
"What’re you doing here?"
Belle gasped. "Please let my father go. Take me instead!"
"You would take his place?"
Belle asked the voice to step into the light and was horrified when she saw the huge, ugly Beast. To save her father, however, Belle agreed to stay in the Beast’s castle forever.

 -12-

The Beast dragged Maurice out of the castle and threw him into a carriage that would return him to town. There, the inventor stumbled into a tavern where Gaston was surrounded by his friends. "Please, I need your help! A horrible beast has Belle locked in a dungeon!"
"Did it have cruel, sharp fangs?" One villager sneered.
Maurice grabbed the man’s coat. "Yes! Yes! Will you help me out?"
"We’ll help you out, old man." Gaston and his pals tossed the inventor out of the tavern. But Maurice’s wild story gave Gaston an idea.
-13-

At the castle, Belle nervously followed the Beast upstairs. He paused for a moment. "The castle is your home now, so you can go anywhere you like except the West Wing."Belle stared back. "What’s the West Wing?"
"It’s forbidden!" Glaring, the Beast opened the door to her room. "You will join me for dinner. That’s not a request!"
After the Beast stomped off, Belle flung herself on the bed. "I’ll never escape from this prison - or see my father again!"

-14-

That night, Belle refused to dine with the Beast. Instead, she crept downstairs to the kitchen. All the Enchanted Objects fed and entertained her. Then Cogsworth agreed to take her on a tour.
Belle halted beneath a darkened staircase. "What’s up there?"
"Nothing, absolutely nothing of interest at all in the West Wing."

-15-
But when Cogsworth wasn’t looking, Belle slipped away and raced up the staircase to a long hallway lined with broken mirrors.
Belle cautiously opened the doors at the end of the corridor and entered a dank, filthy room strewn with broken furniture, torn curtains, and gray, gnawed bones. The only living object was a rose, shimmering beneath a glass dome. Entranced, Belle lifted the cover and reached out to touch one soft, pink petal. She did not hear the Beast enter the room.

Cinderella

Cinderella lived with her mean stepmother and two stepsisters.
She worked hard all day long, cooking and
'cleaning and washing dishes.

-1-

The only friends Cinderella had were two little mice named Jaq and Gus, a horse, a dog, and two birds.
"Cinderella, we love you," they would say.

 -2-

One day the stepsisters are invited to a ball.
At the ball the prince would choose a wife.
Cinderella helped the stepsisters get ready.
Then she asked, "May I come, too?"
"You can't go to the ball,"answered her stepmother.
"You don't have a gown to wear."
-3-

But Cinderella's friends Jaq and Gus
and the birds sewed ribbons and bows
to one of her dresses.
"Oh," said Cinderella, "it looks so pretty. Thank you, my little friends."
"Wait!" cried Cinderella. "I'm coming too."
The cruel stepsisters were angry because Cinderella looked so lovely. They tore at her dress until it hung in rags

 -4-

P
oor Cinderella. She cried and cried.
Her friends cried, too.
Then a small woman appeared in a cloud.
It was Cinderella's fairy godmother.
"Bring me a pumpkin," she said. "I'll fix things!"

-5-
"Biddidi, bobbidi, boo!, sang the fairy godmother  as she waved her magic wand.
The pumpkin changed into a coach, the mice into horses, the dog into a footman, and the horse into a coachman.
She waved her magic wand again, and Cinderella's rags turned into a beautiful gown. On her feet are tiny glass slippers.
-6-

"Good-bye,"called the fairy godmother. "The magic spell will end at midnight. You must leave the ball  before then."

-7-
When the prince seen Cinderella, he fell in love.
Cinderella and the prince whirled around the ballroom.
They danced every dance together.

 -8-

As the clock began to strike midnight, Cinderella ran away.
One of her glass slippers fell off her foot.
-9-
At the final stroke of midnight, Cinderella's beautiful gown became rags once more. Her coach disappeared, too, and in its place was a pumpkin. But Cinderella was still wearing the other glass slipper.

 -10-

The prince looked and looked for Cinderella, but he only found the glass slipper Cinderella lost.
"The girl who can wear this slipper will be my wife," he said.

-11-
grand duke was sent out to have every maiden in the land
try on the slipper.
Cinderella's stepsisters tried and tried to make the glass
slipper fit. But their feet were too big.

 -12-

Cinderella's stepmother locked Cinderella in her room so she can't try on the slipper. But Jaq and Gus got the key and pushed it under the door.
"Hurry, Cinderella," they said.
-9-
When the mean stepmother heard Cinderella running down the stairs, she broke the glass slipper.
"That's all right. I have the other one right here," said Cinderella, pulling the slipper out of her pocket.

 -10-

The grand duke put the slipper on Cinderella's foot.
It fit perfectly.
"Cinderella's going to marry the prince!"
sang the little birds.

-11-

Cinderella did marry the prince, and they lived happily ever after.
